New Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka calls on President

H.E. Mr. Vladimir Mikhailov, The newly appointed Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, calls on President H.E Mahinda Rajapaksa, 09th November 2008 at the President office. Sri Lanka Ambassador H.E Udayanga Weeratunga Introduced to H.E the President his friend new Ambassador and hopefully Sri Lanka can expect much more activities from Russian side under the guides of new Ambassador. The Ambassador Mikhailov emphasized on the longstanding diplomatic ties between the two countries established in 1957. Among other things, both Ambassador Mikhailov and President Rajapaksa stressed the need to expedite the signing of bilateral agreements on education, science, culture, mass media, youth and sports, investment promotion and protection etc. during the discussion.

Visit to Tver Medical

Visit to the Tver State Medical Academy

As the initial step of a range of scheduled official visits to the higher educational Institutions across the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, where Sri Lankan students are educated in, on the 30th October 2008 the Ambassador H.E. Mr. Udayanga Weeratunga visited the Tver State Medical Academy accompanied by the First Secretary of the Sri Lankan Mission in Moscow Mr. Damminda Silva. Presently this academy educates over 126 Sri Lankan students.
During this visit H.E. the Ambassador held a meeting with the Rector of the Medical Academy, Prof. Mikhail Kalinkin, the Dean for the foreign students, Prof. Alexander Ivanov and senior academic staff members, where the academy’s responsibility to develop educated individuals and a range of problems related to the Sri Lankan students were discussed closely. The Academy staff praised the achievements of our students in studies while relating only a few complaints.
A special gathering had been organized between H.E. the Ambassador and Sri Lankan students at the auditorium of the Medical Academy along with the participation of the senior staff. H.E. the Ambassador addressing the audience, emphasized and convinced the audience on the importance and the incomparable value of higher education that is being provided by the Medical Academy now. H.E. the Ambassador further expressed the thoughts how to sustain a balanced student life while maintaining own special interests.
When the audience was given the opportunity to forward its remarks, various suggestions and opinions were raised by a number of students, to which, H.E. the Ambassador promised to take proper actions.
Later that day, H.E. the Ambassador advanced on to the student hostel complex to conduct an inspection on how the life is being carried out beyond the precincts of the university and to be convinced personally the quality of living condition.

Workshop with PANTEON Tour

Workshop for travel agents with tour operator “PANTEON”

The second work shop organized with the assistance of Tour Operator PANTEON (Travel Agent of the NATALIE TOURS) was held on 23rd October 2008. Almost 33 regional travel agents participated this work shop.
Sri Lankan Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga expressed extreme confidence that the Russian Tourism will become the wave of the future of Sri Lanka Tourism.
For the first 1.5 hours The Ambassador H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga has made a speech about the country, some aspects of traveling, customs formalities, and souvenirs as well as the main historical heritage and ancient towns, culture and nature together with the main itinerary for tourists. During his speaking participants had an opportunity to see the picture of Sri Lanka on the big screen behind. At the end of the speech Ambassador told about the most popular hotels on the beach, answered all question of the audience and introduced the new Tourist Promotion Assistant to the Agents.
All participants got presents from the Embassy and from the Ambassador such as video and brochures about Sri Lanka and the best of Sri Lankan tea. Workshops were concluded by the speeches of the Heads of Sri Lankan Department of Panteon. They informed all agents about winter programs of their companies, main itineraries and information about beach hotels in Sri Lanka.

This month the Embassy of Sri Lanka took part workshop for Moscow Travel Agencies which was held by the biggest diversified tour operator “TEZ TOUR” for its agencies chain on 21nd of October. The program of a meeting was completely devoted to Sri Lanka as the best destination within Asia.

Secretary in Saint Petersburg

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence of Sri Lanka visited the Saint Petersburg

Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence of Sri Lanka visited the Russian Federation on the 5th of October to attend bilateral consultations with the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation.
St. Petersburg is a Russian port city on the Baltic Sea. Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, it was the imperial capital for 2 centuries, and it remains the country’s cultural center, with venues like the hypermodern Mariinsky Theatre hosting opera and ballet, and the Russian Museum showcasing Russian art, from Orthodox icon paintings to abstract works by Kandinsky.
Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa took time to visit many places of historical and cultural significance in St. Petersburg on the 9-11th October 2008.

7th evening the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation organized a Reception in honor of Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the residence of H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga. H.E the Ambassador welcomed and highlighted the development in bilateral relations in the past years with a eye-catching presentation the secretary and the guests with a brief welcome speech and lighting of traditional oil lamp. Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa took time to visit many places of historical and cultural significance in Moscow on the 5-8th October 2008.

Reception Leisure 2008

Reception on the occasion of “Leisure – 2008″

On the occasion of Leisure 2008 Moscow Travel &Trade Fair, special reception and dinner was held in Sri Lankan Ambassadors residence on 24th September 2008 evening. The reception, hosted by the Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga, was attended by senior Russian Foreign Ministry officials, diplomats and Russian media personals. Sri Lankan participants for the Leisure-2008 Travel & Trade also joined the reception to mark this occasion.
On the occasion, Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga lauded the Russia-Sri Lanka travel relations and highlighted the development achieved by the Embassy of Sri Lanka during the past three years. On his speech in Sinhala Ambassador Weeratunga mentioned that tourism is one of the largest industries worldwide but still we are not using the maximum strength and correct decisions to promote Sri Lanka among the Russian travelers.

Travel Exhibition “Leisure 2010″ in Moscow

Annual Tourism and Travel fair took place from 24 till 24 September, 2010 in Moscow. Sri Lanka was represented by 12 travel companies and leading hoteliers of the country: The Foretress, Taj Hotels, Maunt Lavinia & Club Bentota, Exotic Global Holidays, Maldiviana, Tangerine Tours, Walkers Tours, Exotic vacations, Jetwing Travels, Lion Paradise, Concord Exotic Voyages, Aitken Spence. Stand inaugurating procedure leading by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Russia H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga happened in traditional Lankan stile with blessing the oil lamp that symbolized the success for any event.
It is well known that 2011 will be the Visit Sri Lanka Year in the country and we are happy to welcome all people to visit our miracle island. Moreover, there will be the World Cricket Cup 2011 in Sri Lanka. First 3 games happened in Sri Lanka in February-March and all interested in that event are welcome to join us!
