Mega Tourism Caravan-7 Successfully in Belarus, Moldova & Ukraine
24 September to 06 October 2014

The “Mega Tourism Caravan-7″ road show which was conducted in the Republic of Belarus, Ukraine and Republic of Moldova for three weeks concluded its journey on 06 October 2014. This epic campaign under taken by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russia, under the personal supervision of the Ambassador Udayanga Weeeratunga, with the collaboration of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau was a huge success in promoting Sri Lanka Tourism and opened enormous avenues to all Sri Lankan participants to expand respective business ventures.
Further, it also facilitated to further the existing political and cultural relations between Sri Lanka – Republic of Belarus, Sri Lanka – Republic of Moldova and Sri Lanka – Ukraine as Ambassador Weeratunga very successfully managed to harness the Diplomatic Corps in both political and cultural spheres, Leading Travel and Tour Operators, High Profile Media Officials, Senior Officials of both public and private sector of both countries and most importantly the General Public. The lectures, presentations, press briefings, public addresses and interactions of the Ambassador were the major contributing factors in harnessing people of all walks of life.
Mega Tourism Caravan-1 first setup Saint Petersburg, the “Venice of the North” posed an ideal launching pad for this campaign. Promotional activities which started on 17 March 2013 were conducted for three successive days with shopping mall activation in Mega Dybenko, Sri Lankan Cultural Night and Photo Exhibition at Moscow Hotel, Workshop and one to one meetings at the Hotel Oktyabskaya and other associated activities.

Successful promotional activities conducted with the Workshop with participation of Travel and Tour Operators in the Belorus, Moldova and Ukraine was the main event. Sri Lankan Night, the cultural show dedicated to the Diplomatic Corps and shopping mall activation for the general public were also well attended and received in Minsk, Vitebsk, Gomel, Kiev & Kishinev.
Workshop’s, Reception and Sri Lankan Night to the Diplomatic Corps, Shopping Mall activation at Dream Town were the major events in Kiev, Ukraine.

After successfully completing the “Mega Tourism Caravan-7” road Show in Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova, His Excellency Udayanga Weeratunga hosted the participants for a dinner at Hotel Cordon, in which there was also a certificate presentation as a token of appreciation to all the participants. H.E the Ambassador appreciated the efforts of all the participants including the dancers and other exhibitors representating various authorities assisted to make the Roadshow a success. Maj.Gen Crishantha De Silva, Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Samantha Pathirana HOC Embassy, Group Captain Ravindra Liyanagamage -Defence Attache, Mr. Viranga Bandara, Junior Manager of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Miss Anna Korolkova -General Director SriLankan Airline Moscow office and Mr. Chandana Wickramasinghe also spoke in the event.

Participation of Laksala, Siddhalepa, Leading Travel and Tour Operators of Sri Lanka and the unparalleled performances by the Dancing Guild of Maestro Chandana Wickramasinghe were the main anchors of this accomplishment. Collaboration and sponsorship of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and the persevering and resolute leadership of His Excellency Udayanga Weeratunga duly supported by the staff enabled this mammoth campaign to become a reality and a success.

Tour Operators and Their Agents in Kishinev, Moldova Updated on Sri Lanka Tourism

Workshop on Sri Lanka Tourism”, the final event of the tremendously successful tourism promotion programme on wheels, Mega Tourism Caravan 7 planned, organized and executed by the Sri Lanka Embassy in the Russian Federation concurrently accredited to the Republic of Moldova was held at the Codro hotel amidst a well-attended gathering of Moldavian Tour Operators and agents.
Sri Lanka Embassy in the Russian Federation concurrently accredited to six other CIS countries in the region has been actively promoting Sri Lanka as a preferred destination amongst tourists from CIS countries and the workshop for Tour Operators and their agents in Moldova was organized in keeping with that overall objective. Tour Operators and their agents in any country play a pivotal role in disseminating information on attractive tourist destinations. Well aware of this phenomenon, HE the Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga conducted a well compiled presentation at the outset of the workshop, sharing all the relevant details with the Tour Operators and agents. Thereafter the gathering was entertained through a variety of cultural and other activities which included; Sri Lankan traditional dancing performances together with a “Perehara”. Apart from these performances, leaflets/souvenirs, tourism promotional videos and T-shirts were distributed amongst those who were present in the mall. In addition more than 1000 thousand Ceylon tea cups were served to all those who had gathered to witness the event.
Apart from all these activities the distribution of leaflets/souvenirs, tourism promotional videos and T shirts were carried out whilst more than five thousand Ceylon tea cups were served to all the visitors.
Once again of the key contributory factor for the tremendous success of this event was the untiring efforts of HE Udayanga Weeratunga, the Ambassador to Russian Federation. His meticulous planning coupled with the extensive knowledge about CIS countries was the key to successful execution of the MEGA Tourism Caravan 7 programme in Moldova.

Sri Lankan Culture and Traditions Shines in Moldova

Mega Tourism Caravan 7, planned and executed under the close supervision of His Excellency Udayanga Weeratunga the Ambassador to Russian Federation, as its final out door event enthralled thousands of Moldovians gathered at the MallDova Mall in Kishinev, the capital city of Maldova, with a glittering cultural show and uniquely Sri Lankan activities. The show termed, “Shopping Mall Activation” continued for two days; 04 and 05 of October 2014 and attracted thousands to the MallDova Mall.
MallDova Mall unarguably one of the most sort after malls both by locals and foreigners has more than 130 shops, a supermarket which covers 2300 square meters, a multiplex cinema, and a playground for children, bowling and other various leisure options. Organizing the Sri Lankan show, a brainchild of HE Udayanaga Weeratunga at the MallDova mall unarguably is a master stroke in attracting Moldavians who travel to South Asia regularly.
National Wine Day returns to the Great National Assembly Square– Kishinev in on October 5th and 6th, 2014 with a revised concept. This year the organizers are brought the audience closer to the wine producers through professional wine tastings, visits to the vineyards and special moments dedicated to the culture of wine, arts and gastronomy. The 12th edition of the National Wine Day is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, Association of Producers and Exporters of Wines of Moldova, Codru PGI Association and Divin PGI Association.
The Sri Lankan stall and the stageconstructed specially for this eventstood elegant at the MallDova mall with grand décor of culture, beaches, wild life, festivals, water sports, Buddhist attractions of Sri Lanka. The performances on both days were preceded by an elaborate introduction to Sri Lanka by the HE Udayanga Weeratunga, which was well received by the large gatherings present at the mall. Thereafter the gathering was entertained by Sri Lankan traditional dancing performances together with a “Perehara” on each day. Apart from these performances, leaflets/souvenirs, tourism promotional videos and T-shirts were distributed amongst those who were present in the mall. In addition more than five thousand Ceylon tea cups were served to all those who had gathered to witness the event.
Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) which partnered this Mega event, contributed in no small way towards its success. SLTPB which has been working hand in glove with the Sri Lanka Embassy in Moscow towards transforming Sri Lanka to be Asia’s foremost tourism destination for thousands of tourists from Commonwealth of Independent States, provided expert advice and specialists in the tourism trade to make the Mega Tourism Promotion Caravan 7 a great success.

Mega Tourism Caravan 7, the unique Sri Lankan Tourism Promotion event launched by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation concurrently accredited to Ukraine unraveled one of its most eye catching activities the “Shopping Mall Activation” which includes diverse cultural performances along with other unique activities at the Dream Town Shopping Mall in the Kiev City Center on the 1 October 2014.
Dream Town Shopping and entertainment center is considered one of the most attractive shopping centers in Ukraine. It is a place that meets all the criteria for a shopping center or a mall. It has everything and more – a lot of branded shops, where you can find everything – from mobile phones to jewelry and fur coats; cafes, restaurants, bistros, pizzerias as well as it is one such place where outdoor activities such as bowling, billiards, curling, ice rink too are possible making the complex one stop shopping center for everyone. Buzzing with activity during all times of the day, Dream Town Shopping Mall unarguably was ideal for Mega Caravan 7 activities.
Mega Tourism Caravan 7 due to popular demand continued its activities for two consecutive days (1 and 2 October) at the Dream Town shopping Mall. The different performances on each day were preceded by an elaborate introduction to Sri Lanka by the HE Udayanga Weeratunga, which was well received by the large gatherings present at the mall. Thereafter the gathering was entertained by Sri Lankan traditional dancing performances together with a “Perehara” on each day. Apart from these performances, leaflets/souvenirs, tourism promotional videos and T-shirts were distributed amongst those who were present in the mall. In addition more than five thousand Ceylon tea cups were served to all those who had gathered to witness the event.
Amongst the Sri Lankan traditional items on display at the shopping mall handicrafts produced by the State owned Gift and Souvenir Boutique “Laksala” attracted a large number of visitors whilst Siddalepa Ayurvedic foot massage applied by specially flown in masseur from Siddhalepa Company was in much demand amongst visitors.

Representatives from Sri Lankan Airlines the national carrier of Sri Lanka disseminated information on the direct flights available from Moscow to Colombo amongst many visitors who were keen on flight details to and from the region. Overall the activities at the Dream Town Shopping mall was a tremendous success and everyone who visited the mall during the presence of Mega Tourism Caravan 7 team praised it for its novelty and uniqueness.

Work Shop on Sri Lanka Tourism conducted for Tour Operators in Kiev

Mega Tourism Caravan 7 a brainchild of HE Udayanga Weeratunga the Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation concurrently accredited to Ukraine, on tourism promotion, arrived in Kiev the capital city of Ukraine on the 29 September 2014 and continued its activities until 02 October 2014. The first event in Ukraine, the Grand Sri Lankan Night held at the Event Hall Kyiv of hotel Ramada Encore on the 29 September 2014 kick started the activities of the Caravan and enthralled all those who witnessed the event.

Grand Sri Lankan Night was followed by two workshops for Tour Operators and Tour Agents on the 30 September 2014 at Fairmont Grand Hotel in Kiev. Renown Tour Operators from Kiev “News Travel” assisted in coordinating the participation of a large number of tour agents at the workshop. With his customary eloquence His Excellency Udayanga Weeratunga conducted a very informative and an educative presentation on Sri Lankan Tourism. Drawing from a wealth of knowledge he possess on the Sri Lankan Tourist Industry the ambassador elaborately covered important aspects such as history of Sri Lanka as well as climatic conditions, major tourist attractions, major cities, visa procedures and recent infrastructure development during the presentation.

At the conclusion of the presentation all the attendees were presented with many promotional materials and a Catalogue on Sri Lanka Tourism containing information about Sri Lankan history, people, festivals, visa procedures, currency, Sri Lankan food, culture and heritage. This comprehensive catalogue is sure to provide valuable information to its readers on cities such as; Colombo, Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Kandy along with other relevant details on wildlife, beaches and star class hotels with the facilities provided.

One of the other attractions at the workshop was the tantalizing dancing performances by the Dancing Troupe directed by Chandana Wickramasinghe. These well-choreographed dancing performances not only entertained the participants and received a well-deserved appreciation for their flawless performances, but also gave an insight to Sri Lanka’s rich and diverse culture.

Mega Tourism Caravan 7, the unique Tourism promotional event organized and executed by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation concurrently accredited to Ukraine in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, arrived in Kiev the capital city of Ukraine on the 29 September 2014. Travelling from Minsk the capital city of Belarus where the event was launched and stopping over at Vitebsk and Gomel again in the Republic of Belarus, the arrival in Kiev signaled another milestone; travelling almost 1000 km overland whilst enthralling locals with eye catching performances.
Kiev is the largest and the capital city of Ukraine. The history of Kiev goes back 1400 years and according to legend, Kiev was founded by three brothers, Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv, and their sister Lybid. The legend also states that Kiev has been named after Kyi, the eldest brother. Today the modern Kiev city having a mix of the old (Kiev has preserved about 70 percent of more than 1,000 buildings built during 1907–1914) and the new, seen in everything from the architecture to the stores and to the people themselves remains the capital of Ukraine.
Mega Tourism Promotion Caravan 7 activities in the beautiful city of Kiev started with a workshop for Tea agents in the morning of 29 September 2014 at the Ramda Encore hotel which is situated on the outskirts of the city. It was followed by a Cultural Show and a Gala Banquet, fittingly named ” Sri Lankan Night” once again at the Ramada Encore hotel.
Meticulously planned and minutely executed under the close supervision of His Excellency Udayanga Weeratunga the Ambassador to Russian Federation concurrently accredited to Ukraine, the ‘Sri Lankan Night’ at the Ramada Encore Hotel was a tremendous success and gave the right impetus to other activities to follow in the Mega Tourism Caravan 7 show.
The presence of over 200 guests at the ‘Sri Lankan Night’ comprising members of the diplomatic corps, leading travel and tour operators in Kiev, prominent businessmen in the tourism and tea trade, leading print and electronic media representatives and the members of the Sri Lankan community added glamour and quality to the evening.
The lighting of the traditional oil lamp marked the auspicious beginning of the evening’s programme. Dignitaries from the Ukraine Foreign Ministry, members of the Diplomatic Corps and a few other distinguished guests participated in this very traditional Sri Lankan custom of lighting the oil lamp.
Addressing the august gathering the Ambassador eloquently explained why Sri Lanka is considered the best tourist destination in the Asian region and the recent acknowledgement of it by many internationally renowned tour operators. He also spoke of the long standing friendship between Ukraine and Sri Lanka and the strong bonds between the peoples of both the countries and invited all those present from the travel trade to encourage their customers to visit Sri Lanka which the Ambassador assured would be an experience to remember.
One of the other highlights of the evening was the Sri Lankan Cultural Show presented by the Dance Guild of maestro Chandana Wickremasinghe encapsulating rich Sri Lankan culture through traditional dancing, drum fusions, mask dancing and a medley of folk songs.
Ramada Encore hotel in Kiev where the Sri Lankan Night was held is an exciting new hotel and an ideal venue for conferencing and meetings. The concept is simple – fresh, stylish, vibrant and upbeat, with comfortable, contemporary accommodation, delicious food and innovative design. Thus the hotel provided the guests with a luxurious environment to enjoy the unique evening of Sri Lankan dance and music.

Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, under the true leadership of Mr. Bashwara Goonarathna is the key institution in promoting the tourism industry in Sri Lanka. The bureau takes the lead in promoting tourist industry in Sri Lanka and making Sri Lanka a gateway to the South Asian Region as well as making Sri Lanka known as the centre of excellence in tourism management and development in the region. Due to Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureu’s untiring efforts a considerable mileage has been gained in making Sri Lanka the preferred destination for tourists from CIS countries.

MEGA Tourism Caravan-7 the novel Tourism Promotion show conceptualized and executed by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation, reached Gomel city, which is another important city in the Republic of Belarus on the 5th Day of its journey, that is on the 28 September 2014. Gomel city situated in the Gomel region is the second-largest city in the Republic of Belarus and is located in the southeastern part of the country, on the right bank of Sozh river and considered as one of the most ancient cities of the Republic of Belarus. The Gomel region of Belarus, borders Russia in the east and the Ukraine in the south. Around a third of the region is agricultural land. Amongst many attractions in the Gomel region, the “Gomel Palace & Park Ensemble” State Historical Cultural Institution stands out. It is considered as one of the oldest museums in the Republic of Belarus. Established as the Gomel Palace-Museum, it has been the leading museum in the Gomel Region and one of the best in Belarus for 90 years. Since the moment of creation, its history has been closely linked to development of the City of Gomel.
With Mega Tourism Caravan 7 stopping by Gomel City its people were afforded an opportunity to witness unique Sri Lankan cultural performances at the picturesque Gomel Secret Mall. With a large number of locals and foreigners flocking to Secret Mall daily it was the ideal location to showcase the Sri Lankan beauty and the culture.
The activities at the Gomel Secret mall commenced with an elaborate introduction to Sri Lanka by HE Udayanga Weeratunga, which was well received by the large gathering present at the mall. Thereafter the gathering was entertained through shopping mall activations which included; Sri Lankan traditional dancing performances together with a “Perehara” which was a major attraction. Apart from these performances, leaflets/souvenirs, tourism promotional videos and T-shirts were distributed amongst those who were present in the mall. In addition more than two thousand Ceylon teacups were served to all those who had gathered to witness the event.
Amongst many activities at the colorfully decorated Sri Lanka’s stall at the Secret Mall, Ayurvedic Massage performed by the masseur from the Siddhalepa Group which is a household name on ayurvedic medicine in Sri Lanka received special attention from those who were present. Whilst applying ayurvedic foot massage on many who had lined up for it, brochures containing details of Ayurveda treatment were distributed amongst them. Siddhalepa Group which has carved out a niche for ayurvedic medicine not only in Sri Lanka, but also in many other countries for its professional approach in carrying out ayurvedic treatment, is a very important partner in promoting health tourism in Sri Lanka and the presence of Sidhalepa representatives at the Gomel Secret Mall along with the other members of the Mega Tourism Caravan 7 added diversity to the tourism promotional activities of the Caravan.
The meticulous execution of the Mega Tourism Caravan programme in Gomel City in the Republic of Belarus was possible solely due to the untiring efforts of HE Udayanga Weeratunga where he personally lead the organizing team by providing essential guidance required.

Travelling a distance of over 320 km from Minsk city where it began its activities, Mega Tourism Caravan 7 arrived in Vibetsk a city in Belarus which is considered the fourth largest city in the Republic of Belarus on the 27 September 2014. Vitebsk is the main city in the Vitebsk region and the region is known as the Belarusian land of lakes (Belaruskaye Paazerye), and has more than 2800 lakes and 500 rivers. More than a third of the region is forest. Approximately 60% of these forests are centuries-old coniferous woods.
Vitebsk city which is popular amongst visitors to the Republic of Belorussia has numerous attractions. Amongst many attractions in the Vitebsk city the Annunciation Church which is one of Vitebsk’s long preserved oldest and a unique building takes the center stage. This magnificent six-pillared building had been constructed in the 1140s, rebuilt in the 14th and 17th centuries, repaired in 1883 and destroyed by the Communist administration in 1961. Scarce remains of the church were conserved until 1992, when it was restored to its presumed original appearance. Today modern Vitebsk city stands as a large administrative, industrial, scientific and a cultural centre of the Republic of Belarus.
Mega Tourism Caravan 7 activities in Minsk began with a colorful Shopping Mall Activation at Marko-City Mall, a Mega Mall in the Vitebsk city center. The Shopping Mall “Marco-City” which is an exclusive shopping mall in Minsk has recently appeared on the map of Vitebsk, but has already become an integral part of the city. Marco City Mall construction is eye catching due to its uniqueness. Eight levels of glass composition, dressed in a metal lace, gives the mall the appearance of a wonderful mirror, where the richness and diversity of the city is reflected along with its residents and guests at a glance, giving a feeling of serenity and purity.
Amongst numerous items on display at the Marco- City Mall, handicrafts produced by the State owned Gift and Souvenir Boutique “Laksala” attracted a large number of visitors. Laksala, the renowned Gift and Souvenir Boutique in Sri Lanka once again lived up to its reputation by not only displaying the items but also assisting in conducting elaborate explanations on the items which were on display. Many a locals were seen keenly observing the items on display and listening to the explanations.
One of the most interesting aspects during the activities at the Marco city Mall was the interest shown by the locals who flocked to witness the activities to obtain details about Sri Lanka. It is also pertinent to note that more than 70% of the people who live in Vitebsk region live in towns and cities. Thus attracting such a large crowd to witness Mega Tourism Caravan 7 activities is bound to pay dividends in time to come.

Grand Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Show- Mega Tourism Caravan 7 organized by the Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation commenced its activities with a glittering show at the Stolista Mall in the Minsk city which is the capital of the Republic of Belarus on the 24 September 2014. Meticulously planned and minutely executed under the close supervision of His Excellency Udayanga Weeratunga, the Ambassador to Russian Federation with accreditation to the Republic of Belarus, the show at the mall aptly named, Shopping Mall Activation showcasing the ‘Culture and Traditions’ of Sri Lanka was a tremendous success and gave the right impetus to other activities to follow.
According to many who visit Minsk, Stolitsa Mall is considered one of the best malls in the city. This Mega shopping Mall got pretty much everything from clothes to alcohol to souvenirs. Due to this Stolista Mall attracts large number of locals and foreigners and is ideal for tourism promotional activities.
The cultural and traditional activities at the Stolista Mall commenced with an elaborate introduction to Sri Lanka by HE Udayanga Weeratunga, which was well received by the large gathering present at the mall. This was followed by Sri Lankan traditional dancing performances together with a “Perehara” which was a major attraction. Apart from these performances, leaflets, souvenirs, tourism promotional videos and T-shirts were distributed amongst those who were present in the mall. Amongst the Sri Lankan traditional items on display at the Stolitsa shopping mall handicrafts produced by the State owned Gift and Souvenir Boutique “Laksala” attracted a large number of visitors. The demonstration of carving of a mask by an expert craftsman created intrigue amongst the spectators who showed keenness to get to know the nitty-gritty of the art of carving masks.
The role played by the Sri Lanka Tourist Board in supporting the efforts of the Sri Lankan Embassy in the Russian Federation in organizing these activities in the Republic of Belarus is also worthy of mention. The Sri Lanka Tourist Board which is the lead agency in promoting tourism in Sri Lanka actively participated in the event keeping in line with its two main objectives; Marketing and promoting Sri Lanka directly or indirectly as a tourist and travel destination of quality in accordance with the Tourism Development Plan and promoting Sri Lanka as a gateway to the South Asian Regions; and making Sri Lanka known as the Centre of Excellence in tourism management and development in the region.
The enormous task of organizing this event which heralded the beginning of another 2-week long tourism promotion campaign in the Commonwealth of Independent States would not have been possible, if not for the resolute and untiring efforts of His Excellency Udayanga Weeratunga, the Ambassador of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation. His vast experience and hard earned knowledge on tourism coupled with the flair for meticulous planning and attention to detail were the main contributory factors for the tremendous success achieved during a short span of time in popularizing Sri Lanka as a tourist destination in CIS countries.
