Food & Beverage Exhibition “World Food – 2008″

Embassy of Sri Lanka in Russian Federation together with the Sri Lanka Tea Board organized Sri Lankan participation for Worldfood 2008 in Moscow, the largest international food & beverage exhibition in Russia and Eastern Europe. This annual event is organized by ITE Group Plc. United Kingdom, and ITE LLC. Moscow and assisted by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, State Duma of the Russian Federation and Government and Core Industrial Associations. All leading tea importers and distributors in Russia and regions of the Russian Federation were invited by TPU and wide publicity was given by the organizers to the fair. Four leading tea exporters; Stassen Exports (Pvt) Ltd, Ceylon Tea Bags (pvt) Ltd, Ceylon Fresh Teas (Pvt) Ltd and Ceylon Tea Land (Pvt) Ltd. participated together with Sri Lanka Tea Board. The participants displayed their range of products and had attractive stands.
H E the Ambassador Mr Udayanga Weeratunge graced the occasion at the opening ceremony and Sri Lankan exporters and their representatives in Moscow were also present.
An information desk providing information on product and other relevant information on the Sri Lankan tea industry was maintained at the stall. This desk was well made use of by interested visitors to the stall. Promotional brochures in Russian and in English and promotional tea sachets were distributed to visitors during the fair. Each day of the fair, branded teas of the participating companies were utilized for the liquid tea service. Many trade inquiries were made and a number of orders are presently under negotiation. The participation by the Sri Lanka Tea Board and the private sector companies was successful.

Welcoming reception of new Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka

The newly appointed Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka H.E. Mr. Vladimir Mikhailov attended the reception and dinner organized by H.E. Mr. Udayanga Weeratunga, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russian Federation. New Ambassador had an opportunity to meet all Sri Lankan official and business representatives and Sri Lankan friends in Moscow and its region.
H.E. Vladhimir Mikhailov showed the great interest in Sri Lanka. Also we found out that he is a no stranger for Sri Lanka and for the Asian region. Earlier he worked in the Russian Embassies in Pakistan and Ethiopia.
In his speech, the new Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. V.Mikhailov said the relationship between the two countries date as far back as 1957 and the relationship and sees it a notable undertaking to the future designed on a well structured ‘vision’. A vision of this kind has already manifested itself through cooperation of various programmes that include Education, trade and commercial. On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation H.E. Ambassador paid tribute and express heartfelt thanks to all those who have contributed support ,for his appointment, specially to the Sri Lankan Ambassador. He said that your goodwill and support appreciate and will be remembered.
Sri Lanka Ambassador H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga welcomed all guests and mentioned that he is very glad about the appointment of the his friend new Ambassador and hopefully Sri Lanka can expect much more activities from Russian side under the guides of new Ambassador. This reception was one of the most colorful reception organized by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow and Sri Lankan students from Tver Medical Academy performed Sri Lankan dance items. After the dance performances Ambassador invited all guest to taste the special Sri Lankan dinner. Ambassadors of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal are also attended this special function.

My daughter, Sithara ‘s first day of school she was attending embassy of India school Moscow also known as Kendriya Vidyalaya for grade one, it was one of the most important day of her school life. Before going to her new school is took her blessing by god, every one from the staff to come and pray for god Buddha. Then take there plates given by Sithara eat milk rice which she served for them then took some photo. She also enjoyed her just do it school bag, i also bought school bag for my son although he is not going to school. Since it is very important then we went to school by car with me, Diyon and Mr. Sudarshan from my office.

Cricket Tournament “Embassy Cup 2009″

Annual Cricket Tournament organized by the Embassy of Sri Lanka for the first time was held on 05th of July 2008 at the play ground of Fist Medical University of Russia. This colorful event was ceremonially declared open by the H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation by lighting the traditional oil lamp and playing National anthem at 10.30 a.m. They were more 150 viewers gathered to watch the matches and all of them were served with lunch provided be the Ambassador. The eight cricket teams of Sri Lankans from the different cities of the Russian federation were participated. The tournament was concluded around 8.00 pm and the certificates and prices were given by the Ambassador, diplomats and sponsors.
All players of the team were given certificated and gift parcels while champions were given Embassy Cup Trophy and Cash US$ 1,000.00, Runner’s Up US$ 500.00. Man of the Match US$ 300.00 and Special award for the all Rounder US$ 200.00. The ceremony was conducted around 8.30 pm with every ones good wishes for the excellent organizing.

Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka visited the Ukraine

Dr. Palitha Kohona, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka visited the Ukraine on the 19th of June to first bilateral consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ukraine. On the 19th June, Dr. Kohona had fruitful discussions with Mr. Zamir Kabulov, Director of Second Asia Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and later with Hon. Aleksendar Gorin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Ukraine. Whilst welcoming the guests Hon. Gorin congratulated Sri Lanka on the rapid development following the military defeat of terrorism in Sri Lanka. At the meeting of Dr. Kohona with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Ukraine they noted the improvements in the Sri Lanka Ukraine Relations in recent years and agreed to work towards strengthening trade and economic relations.
H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the Ukraine and other diplomats were present at the occasion. Matters relating bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and the Ukraine such as increased bilateral political visits, trade and economic relations, defence and military cooperation as well as education, culture, and technological cooperation were discussed by the two parties at the meeting. Strong cooperation between Sri Lanka and Ukraine at multilateral forums was also noted with satisfaction.

17th evening the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation organized a Reception in honor of Dr. Kohona at the residence of H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga. H.E the Ambassador welcomed and highlighted the development in bilateral relations in the past years with a eye-catching presentation the secretary and the guests with a brief welcome speech and lighting of traditional oil lamp. Dr. Palitha Kohona took time to visit many places of historical and cultural significance in Moscow on the 18th June 2008. Next day Dr. Kohona visited the Embassy of Sri Lanka. During the visit H.E the Ambassador, familiarized the secretary of external affairs regarding the novel methods being used by the Embassy in the areas of financial, administrative and consular work, which has contributed to increased efficiency of the Embassy. Dr. Kohona took time to speak with the staff of the Embassy during the visit.

Poson Celebration at the Embassy

The Embassy staff colorfully decorated the Embassy premises with lanterns, Buddhist flags and was also illuminated with decorative lights. Dharma Deshana was conducted by Ven . Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero before chanting of Seth Pirith by the clergy. A “Gilanpasa Poojawa” for the Buddhist monks and a vegetarian dinner for all participants organized by H.E. the Ambassador was also presented. Russian Foreign Ministry officials and Sri Lankans living in Moscow were participated this Dharma Deshana.
