MEGA Tourism Caravan-7 the novel Tourism Promotion show conceptualized and executed by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation, reached Gomel city, which is another important city in the Republic of Belarus on the 5th Day of its journey, that is on the 28 September 2014. Gomel city situated in the Gomel region is the second-largest city in the Republic of Belarus and is located in the southeastern part of the country, on the right bank of Sozh river and considered as one of the most ancient cities of the Republic of Belarus. The Gomel region of Belarus, borders Russia in the east and the Ukraine in the south. Around a third of the region is agricultural land. Amongst many attractions in the Gomel region, the “Gomel Palace & Park Ensemble” State Historical Cultural Institution stands out. It is considered as one of the oldest museums in the Republic of Belarus. Established as the Gomel Palace-Museum, it has been the leading museum in the Gomel Region and one of the best in Belarus for 90 years. Since the moment of creation, its history has been closely linked to development of the City of Gomel.
With Mega Tourism Caravan 7 stopping by Gomel City its people were afforded an opportunity to witness unique Sri Lankan cultural performances at the picturesque Gomel Secret Mall. With a large number of locals and foreigners flocking to Secret Mall daily it was the ideal location to showcase the Sri Lankan beauty and the culture.
The activities at the Gomel Secret mall commenced with an elaborate introduction to Sri Lanka by HE Udayanga Weeratunga, which was well received by the large gathering present at the mall. Thereafter the gathering was entertained through shopping mall activations which included; Sri Lankan traditional dancing performances together with a “Perehara” which was a major attraction. Apart from these performances, leaflets/souvenirs, tourism promotional videos and T-shirts were distributed amongst those who were present in the mall. In addition more than two thousand Ceylon teacups were served to all those who had gathered to witness the event.
Amongst many activities at the colorfully decorated Sri Lanka’s stall at the Secret Mall, Ayurvedic Massage performed by the masseur from the Siddhalepa Group which is a household name on ayurvedic medicine in Sri Lanka received special attention from those who were present. Whilst applying ayurvedic foot massage on many who had lined up for it, brochures containing details of Ayurveda treatment were distributed amongst them. Siddhalepa Group which has carved out a niche for ayurvedic medicine not only in Sri Lanka, but also in many other countries for its professional approach in carrying out ayurvedic treatment, is a very important partner in promoting health tourism in Sri Lanka and the presence of Sidhalepa representatives at the Gomel Secret Mall along with the other members of the Mega Tourism Caravan 7 added diversity to the tourism promotional activities of the Caravan.
The meticulous execution of the Mega Tourism Caravan programme in Gomel City in the Republic of Belarus was possible solely due to the untiring efforts of HE Udayanga Weeratunga where he personally lead the organizing team by providing essential guidance required.
