International Travel & Tourism Fair “UITT 2011″ in Kiev

The Embassy of Sri Lanka took part in 17th International Travel & Tourism Fair UITT 2011 which was held from 23rd to 25th March 2011 in Kiev, Ukraine. 10 Sri Lankan tour companies and hotels participated at the event: Delux Holidays, Ceylon Tours, Connaissance de Ceylan, Concord Exotic Voyages, Tangerine Tours, Jetwing Travels, Calista Travel, Mount Lavinia Hotel, Maldiviana Sri Lanka, Nkar Travel & Tours.

This year the Embassy had the common Stand of 63 sq. m. with “Ukrainian International Airlines” (UIA), the official carrier of Ukraine. That gave the unique opportunity for visitors to discuss flight options at the same place. UIA commenced a direct flight from Kiev to Colombo from 12th December, 2010 twice a week. Before the Fair starts the Airline expressed its intention to extend the flight for a summer period.

H.E. the Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga opened the Sri Lanka stand and introduced Mr. Yury Miroshnikov, President of UIA, and Mr. Sergey Fomenko, Vice President of UIA, to Sri Lankan travel trade community. We are happy to inform that this is the first ever happened consolidation of the Embassy and Airline in the history of the UITT Travel Fair. We hope for the benefits of that alliance for all participants in the future.

During the Fair H.E. the Ambassador took part in a workshop devoted to a destination Sri Lanka for travel agents which was held by Magonia Travel Company in cooperation with Tangerine Tours.

Reception on occasion of “MITT 2011″ at the Embassy of Sri Lanka

On 17th March 2011, Ambassador Weeratunga & Mrs. Weeratunga invited all Sri Lankan participants, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau officials and tour/travel operators in Russia to participate special presentation and dinner at the Ambassador’s residence. More than 50 guests participated. At this reception Ambassador explained the current situation of tourism industry in Sri Lanka.

“MITT 2011″ Tourism & Travel Fair in Moscow
16-19th March, 2011
18th International Travel & Tourism Fair “MITT 2011 was held from 16th to 19th March 2011 at the Expo Center in Moscow, Russia. Sri Lanka Tourism promotion Bureau organized the “Sri Lanka Stand” with support of Sri Lanka Embassy in Moscow and 14 Sri Lankan tour companies and hotels participated at the event.
H.E. the Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga opened the Sri Lanka stand with lighting traditional oil lamp with other participants. Delivering the speech at the opening ceremony, Ambassador Weeratunga explained the current situation of tourism in Egypt and requested the support of all participants to attract more tourists from this region. It will be helped to achieve the government target which is attracting 2.5 million tourists per annum by 2016.

“Why Invest in Sri Lanka?” Reception at the Embassy of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Ambassador in Russian Federation Udayanga Weeratunga was the keynote speaker at a seminar held in Moscow at the Ambassadors Residences last Thursday. Around 50 senior business executives, government representatives, and media representatives participated at this event, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the particularities of the Sri Lanka market. The theme of the seminar was “Why Invest in Sri Lanka”.

Without any doubt, Sri Lanka and Russia are different countries with different cultures, traditions, needs, market regulations and business environment. Despite the diversities, there has always been a close connection between our country and Russian Federation. Our recent political and economic development shows that Sri Lanka is one of the potential destinations for worldwide investors. The objective of this seminar was to help Russian investors adapt to the competitive environment by relocating their investments to low-cost Sri Lanka.

At this seminar, A few investment projects were also brought to the notice by Ambassador Weeratunga. Russian Investors received complete market information about Sri Lanka and additional details about the Kankasanthurai Cement Factory and Hambantota International Port & airport

Ambassador Weeratunga further stated “There are several investment opportunities especially for infrastructure development in the north east region. Through the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Mission in Russia is ready to provide any assistance and support.

During the question and answer session, questions were raised by the participants which is clearly highlighted that the enthusiasm of Russian investors to do business with Sri Lanka.
