Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka visited the Ukraine

Dr. Palitha Kohona, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka visited the Ukraine on the 19th of June to first bilateral consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ukraine. On the 19th June, Dr. Kohona had fruitful discussions with Mr. Zamir Kabulov, Director of Second Asia Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and later with Hon. Aleksendar Gorin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Ukraine. Whilst welcoming the guests Hon. Gorin congratulated Sri Lanka on the rapid development following the military defeat of terrorism in Sri Lanka. At the meeting of Dr. Kohona with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Ukraine they noted the improvements in the Sri Lanka Ukraine Relations in recent years and agreed to work towards strengthening trade and economic relations.
H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the Ukraine and other diplomats were present at the occasion. Matters relating bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and the Ukraine such as increased bilateral political visits, trade and economic relations, defence and military cooperation as well as education, culture, and technological cooperation were discussed by the two parties at the meeting. Strong cooperation between Sri Lanka and Ukraine at multilateral forums was also noted with satisfaction.

Dr. Palitha Kohona, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka visited the Russian Federation on the 16th of June to attend bilateral consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. On the 17th June, Dr. Kohona had fruitful discussions with Mr. Zamir Kabulov, Director of Second Asia Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and later with Hon. Alexey Borodavkin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. 17th evening the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation organized a Reception in honor of Dr. Kohona at the residence of H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga. H.E the Ambassador welcomed and highlighted the development in bilateral relations in the past years with a eye-catching presentation the secretary and the guests with a brief welcome speech and lighting of traditional oil lamp. Dr. Palitha Kohona took time to visit many places of historical and cultural significance in Moscow on the 18th June 2008. Next day Dr. Kohona visited the Embassy of Sri Lanka. During the visit H.E the Ambassador, familiarized the secretary of external affairs regarding the novel methods being used by the Embassy in the areas of financial, administrative and consular work, which has contributed to increased efficiency of the Embassy. Dr. Kohona took time to speak with the staff of the Embassy during the visit.

Poson Celebration at the Embassy

The Embassy staff colorfully decorated the Embassy premises with lanterns, Buddhist flags and was also illuminated with decorative lights. Dharma Deshana was conducted by Ven . Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero before chanting of Seth Pirith by the clergy. A “Gilanpasa Poojawa” for the Buddhist monks and a vegetarian dinner for all participants organized by H.E. the Ambassador was also presented. Russian Foreign Ministry officials and Sri Lankans living in Moscow were participated this Dharma Deshana.

Sri Lankan parliamentary delegation headed Hon. Speaker of the of the Parliament Mr.W.J.M.Lokubandara, Hon.Minister of Cultural Affairs Mr. Mahinda Yapa Abeygunawardena Hon.R.Sampanthan M.P., Ven . Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero M.P., Hon. Nirupama Rajapaksa M.P., Hon. Rukman Senanayake M.P., Hon. Wajira Abeywardena M.P., Hon. Earl Gunasekara M.P. and Mr. Dhammika Kitulgoda – Secretary to the Sri Lankan parliamentary visited Russian Federation on June 2008. They had discussions with Representative of the Russian Federation Duma and members of the United Russia Political Party in Russian Federation. At a special ceremony at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Russian Federation, to mark the launch of the Sri Lanka guide book, the Ambassador to Russian Federation Mr. Udayanga Weeratunga said: We are proud to have undertaken this project. I would like to take this opportunity to commend the creative team that has developed and produced this outstanding piece of work, and also thanks for the embassy staff for their valuable contribution and cooperation. Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga presented copies of this Sri Lanka guide book to the Speaker of the of the Parliament and all delegation of Sri Lanka, who were participated this ceremony. Officials of the Foreign Ministry of Russian Federation, Ambassadors of the several countries and media personals also participated this reception.
