Ambassador visits Kursk

Visit of H.E. The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Kursk State Medical University
21st -22nd May 2011

Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga visited Kursk on 21-22 May as the guest of honor of the Sri Lankan Cultural Show 2011. The visit was made on the invitation of Prof. Viktor A. Lazarenko, Rector of the Kursk State Medical University and the Sri Lankan Students Union of the Kursk State Medical University. The event is annually organized by the Sri Lankan Students community of the Kursk State Medical University.
Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga was received by Rector of Kursk State Medical University Prof. Viktor A. Lazarenko and senior officials of the Kursk State Medical University on arrival.
The Sri Lankan Cultural Show 2011 showcased a wide range of cultural performances including traditional Kandyan dances and Bharatha-Natyam, modern dances and songs which were performed by a large number of Sri Lankan students.

The Cultural Show also consisted of performances by Russian, Malaysian, Brazilian and Nigerian students studying at Kursk State Medical University. The event received wide applauses and positive responses from the audience consisting of Russians and other foreign students.

Over 250 Sri Lankan students study at Kursk State Medical University and occupy the highest number of Sri Lankan students currently studying in Russia. It is one of the leading Medical Universities in Russia.

Addressing the audience, Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga thanked the Sri Lankan students and the Administration of the University for arranging a Sri Lankan Cultural Show featuring unique cultural aspects of Sri Lanka as well as for the contribution and participation of students representing all ethnic communities of Sri Lanka. The ambassador also emphasized the close affiliation between the Kursk State Medical University and the Embassy of Sri Lanka.

Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga met the Sri Lankan student community of the Kursk State Medical University on 22 May. Prof. Viktor A. Lazarenko also attended the meeting

Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga addressed the students on many issues including academic and welfare concerns of students, the developments in Sri Lanka and the developments in Sri Lanka-Russia relations. Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga agreed to provide solutions to many of the issues raised by the students.

During the visit Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga also held bilateral discussions with the Rector and senior officials of the Administration and Academics of the Kursk State Medical University. Later Prof. Lazarenko hosted a lunch in honor of Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga.
