Kursk State Medical University students graduate

10th February the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga took the opportunity to hand over diplomas to 13 Sri Lankan students graduated from Kursk State Medical University in January 2011. The Ambassador wished them for many achievements in their future. These students have completed practical trainings in Nursing Practice, Medical Practice and Reanimation including Therapy, Surgery and Obstetrics.
They have successfully completed Final state examinations in Internal and Surgical Diseases, Gynecology, Pediatrics and Interdisciplinary Exam as the Rector of the Academy informed the Embassy.

Reception PRODEXPO for Tea Industry

Tea Reception took place at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow. Representatives of Tea industry and Russian distributors took part at the event. The Ambassador Weeratunga broadly explained about the current situation of tea industry of Sri Lanka and interesting statistics about tea industry. “I know that Pure Ceylon tea is in demand. I call you to bring with pride the quality of the Ceylon tea in you products. I am sure, that in the future it will make big success for your business”, told the Ambassador to the audience.
Mr. Hasitha de Alwis, Director of Sri Lanka Tea Board addressed the public and noted that 3.2 mln budget will be allocated for Ceylon Tea promotion in the Russian Federation for this year. Mr. Manoj Peiris,Cheif Executive,International Tea Committe also addressed the audience.
Around 100 invitees were at the reception. They could taste not only Pure Ceylon Tea, sponsored by JAF TEA, but enjoyed Sri Lanka national food dinner.
Sri Lanka Tea Board Unit at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow is ready to give any assistance to the Tea Companies and distributors in Russia and CIS.

“PRODEXPO – 2011″ Trade Fair in Moscow

18th International Trade Fair PRODEXPO 2011 the largest international food & beverage exhibition in Russia and Eastern Europe was held 07th till 11th February, 2011 in Expocenter, Moscow. Sri Lanka Tea Board participated with the support of Embassy of Sri Lanka in Russian Federation and together with Ceylon Tea Land (pvt) Ltd & Sri Lanka Tea Bags (pvt) Ltd. In addition, major Sri Lankan tea exporters such as Imperial Tea Export Ltd, Jafferjee Brothers, Empire Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Riston Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Regency Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Dilmah Teas, HVA Foods Ltd, Tea Tang (Pvt) Ltd, St. clairs, Basilur Tea and Ceylon Fresh Tea Company also participated in their own stalls at the Predexpo 2011.
Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga opened the Sri Lanka stand with traditional lightning oil lamp on 7th February 2011 together with other participants. In his brief speech Ambassador Weeratunga mentioned that as this is largest Food & Beverages exhibition in Russia, so Sri Lanka’s participation at the Prodexpo 2011 will help to retain market leadership and promote Ceylon tea in Russian tea market, which is the single largest buyer of Ceylon tea.
This year was marked by the visit of Mr. Hasitha de Alwis, the Director of the Tea Boar of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation. Mr. de Alwis was the first head of the Russian Representative Office of the Tea Board, when it had been set up in Moscow in 1993. He has been stayed in Russia for 3 years. All visitors had an opportunity to drink a cup of pure Ceylon Tea on the Stand during 5 days of PRODEXPO 2011.
The exhibition has taken place with support of the Agriculture Ministry of the Russian Federation, under the patronage of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation and government and core Industrial Association, at the ZAO Expo center. Categories of milk and dairy products , meat and meat products ,fish & sea foods, groceries, cereals , tea, coffee ,organic products, confectionary , bakery dried, fruits, alcohol, low alcohol drink, auxiliary equipment , packing and services were represented at the Prodexpo 2011. Reflecting the latest developments trends in the global food industry, the Prodexpo Exhibition contributes towards marketing new generation food products in Russia that include organic and healthy foods and drinks, ingredients and dietary supplements. The products exhibited represent over 1900 companies from 54 countries of the world. The country included Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Czech Republic, Austria, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, The Nederland’s, France, Japan, Poland, Russia etc.

63rd Independence Day Celebration in Moscow

In the morning of 4th February 2011, members of the staff of the Sri Lanka Embassy celebrated 63rd Independence. Ven. Sevanagala Ginorasa thero & Rakwane Gnanaseeha Thero, conducted the Buddhist religious observances, and Mr. M.V.P.A. Payoe, conducted the Christian prayers.
The proceedings commenced with the recital of the National Anthem. Two minutes silence was observed honoring the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country.

Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga made a toast in which he praised the achievements made in the last 5 years since the election of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He also emphasized that current situation in Sri Lanka will attract the Russian investors and tourists to work with Sri Lanka frequently.
Ambassador Weeratunga said that In the Mahinda Chintana, our President mentioned that Sri Lanka will be made a centre of marine, aviation, commercial, energy and knowledge. The Government of Sri Lanka will bring the benefits of these five great economic forces closer to Sri Lankans. Step by step we are re building foreign relations with other countries. we are having more than 50 years of history of the Soviet-Russian relations. Also Ambassador Weeratunga thanked to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation for their continuously support and advices.
Ambassador Weeratunga not forgets to thanks to Sri Lanka Diaspora for their eternal contribution for the recent flood victims in Sri Lanka.
Hon. Aleksey Borodavkin, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russian Federation congratulate Sri Lanka for the Independence and informed that Russia is ready to further strengthen the bi lateral relations with Sri Lanka and always maintain a positive approach about the current developments in Sri Lanka in all areas.
