His Excellency the Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga along with Mr. Sergis Tarverdyan, the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka to Armenia, ceremoniously opened the Honorary Consulate of Sri Lanka in the Republic of Armenia at No. 3a, Arshakunyats Street, Yerevan.
The event was attended by the Mr. Ashot Voskanian, Director, Asia – Pacific and Africa Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia. Further, senior representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development, representatives of leading travel and tourism companies and senior journalists too were present at the opening.
A workshop on Sri Lanka was held 10 April 2013 at the Hotel Yerevan. The event was attended by more than 250 tour agents interested in comprehensive and reliable information about Sri Lanka as well as being educated to sell and promote this attractive and promising destination. His Excellency Mr. Udayanga Weeratunga, Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation opened the workshop with a lecture in Russian language. For two hours the Ambassador spoke about the history and culture of the country, visa regime, main tour routes and sights of the island. His Excellency informed the participants about the achievements and development of tourism sector in Sri Lanka; in December 2012 Sri Lanka welcomed 1 millionth tourist. For the whole year the country received 1 005 605 tourists, including 28 402 from Russia, which is 32.8% increase compared to 2011. The statistics show that Sri Lanka successfully pursue the target set by His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to attract 2.5 million tourists by 2016.
