The Attorney General of Sri Lanka Hon. Mohan Peiris visited the Russia

“Human and civil rights play a major role in a country and it is considered as an essential element for development; especially the agreement signed by the Attorney General of Sri Lanka and the Prosecutor General of Russia is a new step forward in the long and historical bilateral relationship between Russia and Sri Lanka”. A quote from the HE the Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga at the dinner held in honor of the Attorney General of Sri Lanka and the delegation and as a token of appreciation to the Prosecutor General of Russian Federation and his staff for the assistance in the “Agreement on Cooperation between the Attorney General’s Department of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation”.
The Attorney General of Sri Lanka Hon. Mohan Peiris visited the Russian Federation on 14th to 17th May 2011 on an invitation extended by the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Hon. Yuri Chaika. Hon. Mohan Peiris signed an agreement on cooperation between the Attorney General’s Department of Sri Lanka and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.
Hon. Mohan Peiris and HE the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga were received by Mr. Alexander G. Zyvagintsev, Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation. The distinguished personnel signed the “Agreement on Cooperation between the Attorney General’s Department of Sri Lanka and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation” at the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia on 16th May 2011. Hon. Mohan Peiris signed the Agreement on behalf of Sri Lanka and Hon. Yuri Chaika signed on behalf of Russia.
The parties discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation such as the potential for cooperation between the two institutions in combating International crimes, Protection of Human Rights and Civil Rights, upholding Rule of law as well as sharing information and learning each others’ systems of law. Signed agreement will provide the framework for cooperation in these spheres.
Stressing the strong bilateral relations as well as the common aspirations of Sri Lanka and Russia Hon. Mohan Peiris said that the signing of the agreement would lead to even closer cooperation between the two countries.
A lunch was hosted in honor of Hon. Mohan Peiris at the exclusive Café Pushkin in Moscow by the Prosecutor General’s Office. Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga and other officials of the Embassy also participated. Mr. Aleksandr Grigoryevich Zvyagintsev, Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation and other members of the senior staff were present,
Hon. Mohan Peiris paid a courtesy call on H.E. Alexey Borodavkin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia on 17th May. During the meeting Hon. Mohan Peiris took the opportunity to thank Russia for its continued support to Sri Lanka and exchanged views of common interests.
A dinner Hosted by the HE the Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga to the Sri Lankan delegation and the senior members of Staff of the Prosecutor General’s office in Russia and toasts were made in celebration of the new agreement, cooperation and the relationship between the two nations.
